15-5 PH stainless steel is strong, tough, and corrosion resistant. What makes it different from 17-4 PH, also known for its strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance, is in its uniform martensitic structure, higher transverse toughness, and the way in which properties can be tailored through heat treatment.
15-5 stainless steel is composed of iron plus 15% chromium, 5% nickel, and 2.5-4.5% copper. The chromium and nickel provide strength and corrosion resistance, while precipitation of the copper during aging enables improved consistency and customization of mechanical properties.
In its annealed “Condition A” state, ductility is low and there is some limited risk of corrosion. Heat treatment addresses both of these, resulting in a very consistent alloy ideal for high-load applications in corrosive environments. Its resistance to stress corrosion cracking is also very good.
15-5 PH stainless steel is used in industries from oil and gas production to aerospace, automotive, and pulp and paper. Applications range from valves and gears to pump components, shafts, and fasteners.
